The charity\u2019s investment committee met in September and decided to provide a grant to this US-based research project, which is also supported by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson\u2019s Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information about the research, please click on this link or read the text below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaeljfox.org\/grant\/phase-ii-trial-bone-marrow-derived-mesenchymal-stem-cells-disease-modifying-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.michaeljfox.org\/grant\/phase-ii-trial-bone-marrow-derived-mesenchymal-stem-cells-disease-modifying-therapy<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u00a0&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Phase II Trial of Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells as a Disease-Modifying Therapy for Parkinson\u2019s Disease.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Study Rationale:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><br\/>\n<em>Chronic brain inflammation plays a critical role in the development and progression of Parkinson\u2019s disease. This inflammation damages the brain, disrupts the blood-brain barrier, and creates a pro-inflammatory condition. Mesenchymal stem cells can modulate immune response and\u00a0are capable of migrating to sites of injury. Such stem cells\u00a0are able to recognize and react to the environment by secreting several molecules, including anti-inflammatory molecules and growth factors that interact with the surrounding cells, that can allow damaged brain\u00a0cells to regenerate.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Hypothesis:<\/strong><\/em><br\/>\n<em>Our hypothesis is that multiple intravenous infusions of mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow of a healthy donor will significantly slow the progression of Parkinson\u2019s disease when compared to placebo over a year.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Study Design:<\/strong><\/em><br\/>\n<em>We aim to recruit 45 patients with early to moderate Parkinson\u2019s disease and assign them to one of three treatment arms. Group one will receive 3 infusions of placebo every 3 months; group two will receive 2 infusions of 10 X 10<sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0MSC\/Kg every 3 months and 1 placebo infusion; and group three will receive\u00a03 infusions of 10 X 10<sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0MSC\/Kg every 3 months. All subjects will receive 3 infusions, with 3 months intervals in between. They will be monitored for adverse reactions and clinical improvement for a year after the last infusion.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Impact on Diagnosis\/Treatment of Parkinson\u2019s Disease:<\/strong><\/em><br\/>\n<em>Cell-based therapy has the potential to be\u00a0a transformative approach in the treatment of Parkinson\u2019s disease. By ending the destructive inflammatory process, mesenchymal stem cells may re-establish an equilibrium that promotes cell regeneration.\u00a0This could slow or stop the disease process and restore health to the brain.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Next Steps for Development:<\/strong><\/em><br\/>\n<em>This\u00a0trial intends to provide evidence on the safety, effectiveness, and mechanism of action of\u00a0multiple infusions of mesenchymal stem cells as a treatment\u00a0to change the progression of Parkinson\u2019s disease.
