Several golf clubs will be hosting one-day tournaments this year in support of research to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural tournament at Mont Garni, several other clubs have decided to add a Parkinson’s research tournament to their calendars, in conjunction with AFGolf, the Fédération Royale Belge de Golf and INSEAD.
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that is often characterized by tremors, muscle rigidity, and other movement difficulties, and mostly affects people over the age of 60. There is currently no cure for this fast-growing condition however sport, and in particular golf, has been shown to be helpful in controlling the symptoms alongside medical treatments. Combining an active lifestyle with a social dimension, such as is offered by golf club membership, also helps Parkinson’s patients to feel connected which is good for their mental and emotional wellbeing.
As such, the following golf clubs have announced their intention to host one-day tournaments as part of the ‘’Demoucelle Golf Series’’ to support research to find a cure for this disease, which currently affects 40,000 people in Belgium.
The funds raised at these events will be used by the Brussels-based Demoucelle Parkinson Charity to fund the most-promising research projects, selected by its’ own experts and in partnership with the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
